Email since the 60's, Yep!

Almost all of us use email on a daily basis, but none of us know too much about the history of the invention of this service. During the period of time-sharing computers in the 1960s, there were different users running several different programs at a time and there was no idea of personal computers. However, people used to write programs to communicate with each other as they worked nonetheless. It was a time when the internet did not exist and therefore, the only people who could send each other messages were the ones who were using the same computer. This gave an early birth to the idea of electronic mail which in its true essence meant leaving a Post-it in places you are sure the recipient would check.

Ray Tomlinson and ARPANET

It was Ray Tomlinson, in the year 1971, who created an operating system called ARPANET. The main purpose of this operating system was to copy files in the computing network and he used the commercial “a” symbol for the first time. By using that symbol he sent files to intended people, which remained the standard form to address the people through emails. There was no particular intention or reason, but just simply to communicate with others at work which triggered him to program this particular system. This was a time when the ‘@’ symbol used to be on the letter ‘P’ on the keyboard rather than ‘2’, as Ray Tomlinson himself stated:

“I am amused when somebody tries to illustrate the first email using a modern keyboard and a finger reaching for the '2' key. Wrong key! The @ was on the 'P' key.”

Afterwards, it was Larry Roberts, who first organized all the folders for his boss and still remains an important feature of email services today. However, it wasn’t easy to organize your folders until John Vitall introduced proper software for that in 1975. And it wasn’t until 1978 that email became a commercial form of transaction of government and universities. At those times, both of the parties involved in communication needed to be online or present at the network for an online exchange and you could not just leave messages like you can today. 

Email till 1993

Email started to make new inventions as the time went on, such as offering readers to read their messages offline and replay them whenever they wanted to. Email servers, "save messages" and allow you to open your messages even when the sender is offline thus making email a more reliable form of transaction. It wasn’t long before email started to become a common global platform to communicate, but it will not be wrong to say that no one expected it would have such an impact. Even Ray Tomlinson was not expecting for it to create the hype that it did.

Up till 1993, people were still using the world's electronic mail to refer to what we now call email, while this abbreviation had still not become public. Afterwards, it was Yahoo! And AOL (America Online) that took matters in their hands and started to shape the future of email. They were aware that people were turning towards this new means of communication and they made it accessible for them with time. Now there are a number of different email servers that offer good services to their users, including some of the older platforms such as Hotmail and Gmail which are still widely used by the public.
